Video Summary
Mary Ann Dreyer’s webinar explored how artificial intelligence can support periodontal diagnosis, classification, and practice workflows. AI can analyze radiographs for bone loss and other abnormalities, help identify early disease, improve consistency among clinicians, and support treatment planning and long-term monitoring. Voice-activated charting and software integration may also streamline periodontal documentation and reduce time pressure.

The presentation emphasized using AI alongside the 2017 AAP staging-and-grading system. Staging describes disease severity, while grading estimates progression and risk. AI can help clinicians interpret radiographic bone levels and communicate findings to patients, but accurate diagnosis still requires clinical examination and probing. Radiographic tools cannot reveal every early change, and poor-quality images remain a limitation.

Dreyer highlighted the importance of complete periodontal records, consistent clinical attachment level measurements, and clear patient communication. Visuals and numerical measures can help patients understand their condition and treatment needs. AI may also free up time for education and home-care guidance.

Successful adoption requires comparing vendors, checking FDA clearances, privacy protections, costs, and compatibility with practice software. Training and a learning curve are also important. AI is not a substitute for clinical expertise; it is an adjunct that can improve decision-making, standardization, and patient care.
