Video Summary
Dr. Moitri Osha’s webinar examined the two-way relationship between diabetes and periodontitis. Diabetes can increase periodontal risk through elevated glucose in gingival fluid, altered oral bacteria, impaired immune-cell function, chronic inflammation, advanced glycation end products, damage to collagen and blood vessels, and slower wound healing. These changes can promote tissue breakdown and alveolar bone loss.

Periodontitis may also worsen metabolic regulation. Periodontal bacteria and the resulting inflammatory response release mediators such as TNF-alpha, interleukins, C-reactive protein, and matrix metalloproteinases. These can contribute to insulin resistance and poorer glycemic control. The speaker emphasized that the conditions can reinforce one another, making coordinated care important.

The presentation reviewed diabetes types, symptoms, diagnostic tests, complications, and periodontal disease features. It also discussed identifying possible undiagnosed diabetes in patients with severe, recurrent, or persistent periodontal problems and recommending medical evaluation.

For dental care, Dr. Osha advised reviewing medical history and current glucose control, consulting physicians when diabetes is poorly controlled, and adjusting or postponing elective invasive treatment when appropriate. She highlighted stress reduction, atraumatic techniques, infection control, close healing follow-up, and preparedness for hypoglycemia or other emergencies. Well-controlled diabetes may allow routine periodontal and implant treatment, while implant decisions should account for glycemic control and potential healing risks.

The overall message was that evidence-based collaboration between dental and medical professionals can help manage both conditions and interrupt their reinforcing cycle.
