Video Summary
The webinar focused on Healthy People 2030 oral health objective 07: increasing the proportion of oral and oropharyngeal cancers detected at the earliest stage. Speakers reviewed the burden of disease, noting about 54,000 new cases annually and major disparities by sex, race, insurance status, education, and income.

Dr. Mark Lingen explained that oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancers have different causes: oral cavity cancers are still often linked to tobacco and alcohol, while most oropharyngeal cancers in North America are now HPV-related. He emphasized that oral cancer screening is not a standalone test but part of a thorough visual and tactile head-and-neck exam. He also reviewed ADA guidance, which generally does not recommend adjunctive screening devices or brush biopsies except in limited situations when biopsy is not feasible or a patient declines.

Dr. Ashley Brody demonstrated how to perform a consistent oral cancer exam and showed how to distinguish reactive lesions from precancerous or cancerous ones. Key warning signs include sharply demarcated borders, red-and-white speckling, induration, granular or friable tissue, and nonhealing ulcers.

The webinar closed with practical strategies: include oral cancer screening in every exam, educate medical colleagues, and promote HPV vaccination.
