Video Summary
The webinar, presented by Dr. Hyeong-Ju Kim, focused on peri-implant disease, especially peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. He explained the 2017 definitions: mucositis is inflammation around an implant without bone loss, while peri-implantitis includes progressive bone loss with bleeding, probing depth, and/or suppuration. Prevalence is significant, with studies reporting mucositis in about 35% of implants and peri-implantitis in about 9% at the implant level.

Dr. Kim reviewed major risk factors and causes, emphasizing bacterial plaque, poor oral hygiene, lack of maintenance, smoking, excess cement, early implant exposure, previous periodontitis, improper implant positioning, and possibly occlusal overload. He noted that peri-implant bacteria often resemble periodontitis-associated organisms.

Treatment options ranged from non-surgical therapy, which is more effective for mucositis than peri-implantitis, to surgical approaches such as open flap debridement, resective surgery, implantoplasty, regenerative therapy, laser protocols, and explantation in severe cases. He stressed that early diagnosis improves outcomes.

Prevention was a major theme: correct implant placement, maintaining adequate distance between implants, and strict long-term maintenance with regular probing and radiographs are essential. Dr. Kim repeatedly emphasized that maintenance and early detection are the best ways to prevent peri-implant disease and preserve implants.
