Video Summary
Dr. Ralph Cooley, a longtime dentist and dental educator, presents the first part of a three-part webinar on physical strategies for dentistry. He explains that dentists are at high risk for musculoskeletal problems because dentistry involves prolonged static postures, long hours of sitting, stress, and repetitive work. He emphasizes that the dentist is the most important “piece of equipment” in the office and encourages proactive self-care rather than guilt-driven “shoulds.”

Cooley shares evidence-based data showing high rates of pain among dental students and dentists, including early retirement due to musculoskeletal disorders. He introduces the idea of treating dentists like “dental athletes” who must train their bodies to support their profession.

The main focus of this session is cardio/aerobic exercise. He reviews its benefits: improved blood flow, more mitochondria, better stress tolerance, improved mental clarity, and overall health. He recommends finding a form of exercise you enjoy and can maintain. Guidelines from the American College of Sports Medicine are discussed, including 150–300 minutes of moderate exercise or 75–150 minutes of vigorous exercise per week. He also explains how to gauge intensity using heart rate, the talk test, and perceived exertion, and briefly introduces high-intensity interval training. Finally, he warns against cold stretching before exercise and recommends warming up first.
