Video Summary
Dr. Ralph A. Cooley’s webinar focused on physical strategies dentists can use to reduce injury and improve long-term health. He emphasized that dentistry places the body under prolonged static postures, making neck, shoulder, back, hip, and wrist problems common. The first major topic was range-of-motion exercise and stretching. Cooley explained that stretching helps restore mobility, increase blood flow, nourish spinal discs, reduce trigger points, and lower stress. He reviewed key guidelines: use proper technique, avoid bouncing, breathe normally, hold stretches for 15–30 seconds, and stretch only to resistance, not pain. He demonstrated several stretches for the neck, shoulders, chest, piriformis, hamstrings, hip flexors, trunk, and forearms, noting that many can be done in the office between patients.

The second major topic was resistance training. Cooley explained that strength training is important for dentists, but the goal should be muscle endurance rather than maximal strength. He highlighted the core and trunk muscles that should be strengthened and cautioned against overemphasizing muscles already overused in dental posture, such as the upper trapezius and pectorals. He discussed training options including bodyweight exercises, machines, free weights, resistance bands, and personal trainers. His advice was to use moderate resistance, aim for challenging final repetitions, train two to three times per week, and maintain a plan.

Overall, Cooley encouraged dentists to give themselves permission to care for their own bodies so they can practice more comfortably, longer, and with better quality of life.
