Video Summary
The webinar, “Setting the Foundation for Healthy Implants,” featured Dr. Timothy F. Kaczynski discussing how to prepare extraction sites for successful dental implants. He emphasized that implant success begins before placement, with atraumatic or minimally traumatic extractions, thorough degranulation, and preservation of bone and attached gingiva.

Dr. Kaczynski outlined his preferred protocols for socket preservation, including the use of an allograft material for grafting sockets and a long-lasting resorbable collagen membrane when needed to protect the graft from epithelial ingrowth. He also described a synthetic option, Osteogen, a calcium apatite material in a bovine Achilles tendon matrix, which he favors in four-wall sockets because it integrates predictably and does not require a membrane in those cases. He stressed that grafts must be covered and stabilized with proper suturing techniques to avoid early wound opening and graft failure.

A major theme was maintaining at least 2 mm of attached gingiva on the facial aspect of every implant. He explained how to manage soft tissue during extraction, grafting, implant placement, and later tissue repositioning if attached gingiva is insufficient.

Throughout the lecture, he showed clinical cases demonstrating extraction, grafting, implant placement, healing, and final implant restorations. In Q&A, he confirmed Osteogen as the synthetic socket preservation material, advised against using anesthetic to wet grafts, and recommended seeing patients about one week post-op for suture removal and evaluation.
