Video Summary
This webinar, presented by Jill Lowen, reviewed the history, marketing, health effects, and clinical implications of tobacco product use, smoking, and vaping for dental professionals. It traced tobacco’s long history and highlighted how the tobacco industry has repeatedly misled the public, targeted youth and marginalized communities, and promoted addictive products through advertising, flavors, and social media.

The talk covered many product types, including cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, hookah, e-cigarettes/vapes, heated tobacco products, clove cigarettes, beedies, synthetic nicotine, and oral nicotine pouches. It emphasized that nicotine is highly addictive, often beginning in adolescence, and that dual or multiple-product use is common among teens and young adults. The presentation also discussed EVALI (vaping-related lung injury), nicotine poisoning, battery explosions, and the oral and systemic harms associated with these products.

Dental consequences included periodontal disease, tooth loss, delayed healing, staining, bad breath, caries, oral lesions, reduced taste and smell, and increased oral cancer risk. The speaker also reviewed secondhand and thirdhand exposure, the risks of marijuana use, and concerns about vaping’s effects on cardiovascular, respiratory, mental health, and oral tissues.

Finally, the webinar stressed that dental professionals play an important role in tobacco dependence treatment. It recommended evidence-based approaches such as the 5 A’s, motivational interviewing, quit lines, counseling, and FDA-approved medications. The message throughout was that quitting is difficult but absolutely doable with support, planning, and follow-up.
