Can we safely and comprehensively treat patients with special healthcare needs (SHNs) and medical complexities in our private practices? Yes, and here is how:

1. Many patients with SHNs continue seeing their pediatric dentist well into adulthood; pediatric dentists are looking for GPs to transition their care, too!
2. Most patients with SHNs and seniors with medical complexities get referred to hospital centers, where care could be delayed for months, if not years, causing simple, preventive issues to become more complicated. Research shows many of these patients could have avoided the hospital if timely intervention was provided at a private practice.
3. GPs treating this patient population report higher career satisfaction and stronger team retention than their peers who do not.
  • Become familiar with the ethics and principles of caring for those with SHNs and medical complexities.
  • Review the most common medical comorbidities and their dental considerations, as well as in- office emergencies.
  • Navigate informed consent, power of attorney and guardianships.
  • Become familiar with offering at-home services with portable dentistry, teledentistry and working with registered dental hygienists in alternative practices.
